The Vice President Will Have None of That

Many Bronco fans and football media are in frenzy this afternoon following Peter King’s appearance on NBC’s pre-game of the Saints at Seahawks matchup.  King stated that he had a conversation with John Elway in which he quoted the new Broncos V.P. as saying:

“I don’t think Tim Tebow is a good NFL quarterback at this time.”

PK went on further to say that fans shouldn’t be surprised if Josh McDaniels lands in Minnesota as the new offensive coordinator that McD might push the Vikes to try and swing a big trade deal to bring Tebow to Minnesota.  That along with his Elway quote figuring that the Broncos would be willing to facilitate this trade scenario.

King’s statement went out like a shot heard round the world (or the Rocky Mountains at the very least).  Broncotalk’s Ian Henson immediately posted the news linking PFT’s version of the story which might be a tad, how do you say, sensationalistic?  Shortly after this spread like wildfire Elway released the following statement via Twitter:

“To clarify my thoughts on Tim Tebow,” Elway said.  “I think he’s a very good football player, and if anyone can turn themselves into a great QB, Tim can.  Myself and our entire organization think very highly of him.  We are pleased with his first year as a Bronco.  Any speculation that the Denver Broncos are considering moving Tim is completely false.”

I would think that pretty much decimates any further controversy or trade rumors.  ESPN AFC West columnist and former Denver Post writer Bill Williamson stated that the Broncos organization learned from the Cutler and McDaniels standoff:

The Broncos nipped a potential issue in the bud Saturday when new Denver football czar John Elway made it clear the Broncos are happy with quarterback Tim Tebow and that the team has no intention of trading him.

However the story doesn’t end there.  Pro Football Talk went on to say that Elway didn’t end the trade rumor, just made it clear as mud for leverage.

Frankly, Elway didn’t do much clarifying in those remarks.  Instead, he did a lot of ignoring.  He said what he said to King, and the fair inference is that Tebow would potentially be in play to be moved, especially if the guy who drafted him in 2010 can persuade his next team to make a play for Tebow.

And we wouldn’t expect Elway to do anything other than say that the Broncos don’t plan to trade Tebow.  Either he’s telling the truth, or he’s trying to obscure the truth in order to build leverage for an eventual deal.

What isn’t being said here is there are forces covering each other’s bases.  Peter King came out with his original quote on NBC which we can only assume is accurate.  However, the quote matches Elway’s original statement on Tebow during his introductory press conference where he called Tim a dang good football player, now we just have to turn him into a dang good quarterback.

It sounds like King omitted the second half of whatever Elway told him in the interview to use it as a juicy storyline.  When John came out and made his statement on Twitter it left a little bit of egg on King’s face.   PFT followed up by saying that Elway is hiding the front office’s true motives.  Is it that, or are you standing up for King after he put himself out there on national television and it came back to bite him?  Lets remember that NBC hosts King on Sunday Night Football as a regular analyst and that PFT became a subsidiary of NBC back in 2009.

They can attack Elway and perpetuate this myth further, all we can do is speculate  as to why.  We hate to speculate, as that’s how all of this “news” started in the first place.  Elway cleared the air with his statement.  It sounds like King needs to come forth and do the same.  Otherwise this is a dead issue.

    Initially I was pissed at Elway, and do think he needs to be more careful. However, what Elway said, whether he was partially quoted or not, is consistent. Tebow is not a good QB YET. It was King that took an innocent comment and turned it into a trade to Minnesota.

    Woody has a great column to today suggesting Ron Rivera as HC and Dennison i
    as assistant HC/OC. That would get me excited.

    Everyone just needs to calm down about this dunb shit. If you notice, Tebow has kept his mouth shut and his doin what he knows best: workin hard to become the next elite QB. cutler had a fit and asked to be traded. McD did pretty much nothin to disolve the rumors. but in this situation u got another loud mouth “journalist” creating rumers and the new VP is doing exactly what he's supposed to which is stomping that stupid shit out and and the QB in question right now is doing exactly what hes supposed to do which is not sweating the stupid shit and staying about his business and letting his bosses worry about the media mumbo jumbo. until any of that changes and someone starts rockin the boat, we as true fans need to believe in what the team is trying to do. Elway han't steered us wrong in the past, why assume that hes doing it right now?

    Mike Florio really seems to have an axe to grind when it comes to Elway. He spent the better part of yesterday posting speculative, fact-less post about Elway and the Broncos. My feeling is Florio has gotten a taste of the big life on NBC, and this hack writer has developed a complex. The bottom line is Denver CANNOT deal a QB at this point because we have too few resources and too many needs. Combine that with the fact that he remains one of the teams largest revenue streams, and it is clear as Aquafina that Tebow stays.

    On another note, did anyone see how well Stokely and Earl Thomas (pretty sure he would have been ours if we did not trade to get Alphonso Smith)…More of our loss. Tebow is a keeper if we can improve his reads and accuracy. Either way, it will take several years to know for sure.

    (Bryan, Kyle and I cleared the air over twitter last night and came to a better understanding of each other, but I still promised a full rebuttal. As it stands I still consider him a good friend in the blog world and respect the hell out of his opinion, just don't agree on this piece)

    1. I broke one of my biggest self rules: I mixed news with an opinion piece. Something I don't really care for. I did this for two reasons. One Elway's statement was news worthly, but it didn't exactly carry much meat for a post. Jon even posted the follow up in the comments section of Ian's post. Two, the way PFT jumped on Elway's statement for no good clear reason deserved a response IMO. In my defense I posted it under Broncos Buzz not News. Anything in buzz might be rumor or speculation. Don't take it as gospel.

    2. We addressed this but I was hypocritical in stating we shouldn't speculate after speculating. I still stand by my statement that King had no basis for creating a Minnesota trade rumor. It's already moot as reports are putting McD in KC instead of Minny now. Is he going to bring Tebow in to compete with Cassel? No.

    3. Bryan felt that my article was a campaign piece for the franchise. One thing I made clear is that I feel the Elway hiring is as much marketing as it was a business decision. Having his name in the franchise puts people in the seats. I do feel that Bowlen completely trusts Elway and that's something he hasn't had in the building recently. I dislike the sentiment that we're going to automatically win superbowls based off of Elway's hiring. It's junk like that which makes Denver's fanbase seem ridiculous on the national stage a lot of times. It's kind of like the local news always picking the dumbest person they can find to go on camera.

    I could air this out all day, but I think we've come to a half-agreement. Bryan called me out on a few things which I acknowledge however I still stand by my belief. Regardless of how much wing nut conspiracy theory I threw into it.

    This morning while watching the NFL Network confirmed me feelings on why I wrote this. King's rumor is already being repeated as fact. They asked Michael Lombardi about Denver dealing Tebow as if it's already in motion and he had to address the question.

    It's the “fair inference” part of Florio's post that gets me. It's fair to infer that, by saying the Broncos are committed to Tebow, the Broncos aren't committed to Tebow?

    I understand front office people lie to the media all the time, but to assume so just to support a scenario that is built upon a hypothetical series of events is just ridiculous.

    Furthermore, the motives behind Elway not specifically addressing the trade speculation go well beyond King or Florio's comprehension, apparently. Elway is not going to declare Tebow starting QB material because, 1) Tebow is not, and 2) that is not his role as Exec VP. That's the head coach's job to determine starter status.

    I really can't recall face-value comments taken so far out of context. The media is clearly out to get Elway, IMO.

    Interesting to note that according to wikipedia, Elway hater Mike Florio is “a life-long fan of the Minnesota Vikings.” Hmmm… Maybe doing his part (with Peter King) to get Tebow with the Vikes. Not gonna happen.

    It looks like the list of candidates is growing quickly, which is good. Unlike 2 years ago, there doesn't seem to be that 2-3 coordinators that everyone considered legitmate – as in Spagnola, Ryan, Schwatz and yes, McDaniels. The one name I have not seen on the list, but hope it come to fruition, is Rob Maranelli.

    It's going to be a difficult choice no doubt. The best scenario I see right now would be Rivera as the HC and Dennison as the asst. HC/OC. I am also starting to warm up a bit to Fox. It will be interesting to see if Mulakey does intervew like he indicated he would, or if he just blew us off.

    That would be sweet, I'd like to see Fox and Rivera switch though, but isnt there a rule that you can't leave a DC job to be a DC somewhere else if you're under contract? Same for Dennison as an OC. Dennison would have to be named Assistant Head Coach to get around that I think.
